I have the opposite response for LI- I add anyone who asks because I have no idea where that network might take me but the more contacts the better I think. (I do have a similar policy to yours for facebook however- I don't add anyone I haven't met and I'm discerning about people I have met as well)

I do like your approach however because it gives and opportunity to start a conversation rather than just randomly collecting names. I have spent a good part of my entire career listening to power tell me - when I speak truth to it - why I need to "be grateful" or "respect authority", in other words: "shut up, sit down and do what you're told".

Well, that's never been, nor is it likely to become who I am. I try to be respectful in all my interactions, no matter who I'm talking with, and the feedback I get from trusted people supports that I am. So I reject the idea that presenting another approach, or a differing opinion is somehow unacceptable. And if it is unacceptable in a particular environment, that is a clear indication that I am in the wrong environment and it's probably time to move on.

Thanks for the reminder!Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01869209713717761010noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6506991690184027637.post-51373508322652228222014-09-29T14:52:19.675-04:002014-09-29T14:52:19.675-04:00Agreed:-)
Collaboration with engaged stakeholders ...Agreed:-)
Collaboration with engaged stakeholders is very different from consensus. Consensus just means that no one is choosing to disagree (but they might not be totally engaged or in agreement). -- MonicaUnknownhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14941922240829941149noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6506991690184027637.post-38095482490812970962014-08-29T20:16:22.196-04:002014-08-29T20:16:22.196-04:00I really needed this post. I...Maybe I am not old enough, but I still ask why. It gets me into trouble at times, but I don't mind that type of trouble -- I find it revealing.

Often, I find people try to 'insert' themselves between me and the individuals I am asking 'why', as if I am naive to be asking that question.

I don't see it that way. If you can't respond with a good reason why, especially if you are a leader or in a senior / executive position, that is a red flag for me and I'd rather know your answer is insufficient.

The final point I'd make, is that when you ask why, it is often more about how the individual answers the question as opposed to the answer itself. What was their initial facial reaction to the question? Their body language? Their tone of voice when responding. What did they say? What didn't they say?

-mike
Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6506991690184027637.post-50283534606211896612014-03-04T13:46:35.756-05:002014-03-04T13:46:35.756-05:00Nailed it!Nailed it!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6506991690184027637.post-7922773144929939552013-12-24T13:17:37.134-05:002013-12-24T13:17:37.134-05:00Thanks Cats_herder! You’re bang on and I agree with you completely.

However, the irony of my situation was such that even as a "networker extraordinaire", a 2+ year unemployment resulted in:
0 job offers
0 offers from my "valuable" alumni networks (Queen’s, Waterloo)
1 close call from Rogers – intro provided by a professional 1st degree contact making an intro + recommendation
1 almost-offer for a 12 month mat leave fill – with my old team from 12 years earlier (we all knew I was 12 years "past" this role)
100’s of resumes in the vacuum of online job applications
Then TD specifically put out a request for "general managers" with a gap on their resumes as part of the Back to Business program.
